2005/2006 was our first season playing in a league, it is fair to say we had a mixed season.
Our first game was a 5-0 loss, there after it didn’t get much better as we lost our next 3 games, the only positive thing going for us was that we had scored 8 goals. Our next game brought a 4-0 win which gave us a much needed boost, there after we started playing the way we know we can and went on a four game winning streak, where we beat the eventual league winners 3-0 and beat the league runners up 2-0, showing that on our day we are capable of beating anyone. We eventually finished 5th out of 8 teams in the league.
One of the highlights of our season was managing to get to the semi-finals of the cup.
Rhys Connolly, showed once again that he is the engine of the team, also scoring 6 goals of which 3 were from free kicks , Matthew Wiggins proved that he is worthy of being the teams striker by scoring 8 goals, finishing one ahead of Steven Suarez and grabbing top goal scorer which wasn’t decided until the last game of the season! Steven himself has now established himself in the middle of centre midfield with some superb tackling and shooting abilities and 7 goals to his name. Ben Russell, has made some fantastic dribbling runs down the left wing often skipping past 3 or 4 challenges, he has also shown that he can tackle as well as score goals, with 2 goals to his name. Jamie Wake has also managed to show he can score goals with 4 goals this season 3 of which were in cup games and 2 of those where crackers against Haslemere where he came of the bench and gave us the 2 goals we needed to put us through. William Edwards-Phillips & Joshua Hayes have played with great discipline at the back, doing as is asked of them and not moving further than the half way line, both of them have been tremendous.
Luca Mustert and Jamie Goodall have been our keepers this season, both of them have more than played there part, pulling off saves that even Paul Robinson would be proud of. Aron Hiederson made a late entry to the team, and showed that football is in his blood with some great tackling, certainly one to watch out for next season.
More recently we also managed to get to the semi finals of the Guildford City Boys tournament, narrowly losing 1-0.
I would like to thank all the players for all their hard work they have put in at training and matches and all the parents and coaches for their support.
Next season we will be challenging for the league!!!
Season 2004/5 (29/07/06)
Under 6s
Since our squad started training together in august we have come along way, to date we have played 10 friendly games against 4 different teams and have won 4 of those games, lost 4 and drawn 2 to which the management team are very happy with. Below are the fixtures and results with a brief summary of how we got on. Feltham Youth: 1-0 Win Feltham 0-0 Draw 0-1 Win Byfleet Feltham was our first Friendly game, and we was unlucky to lose the first game, after a good team talk the team did really well in the second game to get a draw. In the final game Lewis saved the day with a great strike to give Byfleet there first win.
Worplesdon Rangers: 0-1 Win Byfleet As most of you who were present will remember it was a very hot day, and we had to play on a slightly larger pitch!! The boys did very well to get a well-earned win with Matthew scoring what turned out to be the winning goal. During the game we had numerous chances and if it wasn’t for a very good Worplesdon keeper we would have won 2 or 3 nil. Reece and Ben was fantastic putting in some really good tackles, Jamie and George did really well down the wings causing problems for Worplesdon. At the back William was brilliant, a real little John Terry, so much so that our keeper for the day have very little to do.
Guildford City Boys: 0-4 Win Byfleet 0-3 Win Byfleet This was one of those days where everything just came together, Ben opened the scoring with a great goal, and minutes later Matthew scored to almost put the game to bed, Ben then killed of Guildford by scoring his second of the day to make it 3-0, and just before the final whistle Jamie pops up to make it 4-0.
Spirits were running high after the first game, but it was important for the boys to keep there focus for the second game, to which they did brilliantly. Matthew scored a lovely goal to open the scoring, with his second of the day, then Steven had a goal disallowed for kicking the ball out of the goalkeepers hands, half time came and Steven had shown that he wasn’t happy with he’s goal being disallowed, the management team replied by telling Steven that if he kept around the oppositions box, and kept making his runs his goal would come....what happens next, 2 minutes after the restart Steven shows us what we know he’s capable of and goes past 2 players and scores a brilliant individual goal. Finally to kill of the game Reece scores a great little goal to make it a 4-0 win. What a fantastic team performance, and a 3rd clean sheet in a row.
Feltham Youth: 0-0 Draw 2-1 Feltham Win This was the one we had all been waiting for, and the game was worth the wait, again a lovely sunny day for football on a nice pitch, in the first game there wasn’t a lot in it, end to end stuff with Byfleet looking the stronger team the first game ended 0-0. We started the second game brightly and after 3 minutes should have had a goal that clearly crossed the line, then 2 minutes later we should have had a penalty. Shortly afterwards Feltham broke quickly and scored a good goal 1-0 to Feltham, 2 minutes later Ben makes a darting run in to the box and is brought down for a Penalty, Ben steps up to take the penalty but strikes it straight to the keeper, the management team were now sweating on the side lines, but then up steps our top goalscorer Matthew to level the game and bring it to 1-1, now its end to end stuff with both sets of fans hearts racing, and in the dieing minutes Feltham scored to win 2-1, we couldn’t help but feel robbed with the goal that went in!!
Abbey Rangers: 1-5 Win Abbey 3-1 Win Abbey Not a great deal of positives to bring from this game, only that Matthew scored in the first game to make him firm favourite to be top goalscorer. Lewis scored in the second game for another consolation goal. Our last results show there is still room for improvement, but we are confident that we have the making of a good little team. All we now need is a regular goalkeeper.
Abbey Rangers: 2-3 Win Byfleet This was an important game for the team, not just because it was our last friendly game of the season but also because we felt that last time around we didn’t deserve to be beaten 5-1 & 3-1. As with the last time we played, we started of very well, but after 8 minutes the team got caught to far up field and abbey managed to break through and score to make it 1-0. Shortly afterwards Matthew missed a good chance and put the ball wide, we were then unlucky not to have equalised as there was a mad scramble in there box, somehow abbey managed to get the ball out and break away, abbey then scored there second goal with a well taken goal, Had it not been for William our new goalkeeper we could have been 3 or 4 down by half time. The management team made a few changes and told the boys they were doing well and to remember what we had practiced, i.e. marking and looking up and passing, and most importantly told them they could still win the game. 7 minutes into the second half, Matthew slots in a great goal to make 1-1, now things was starting to look different, Josh playing his first game was solid as the last man at the back enabling Reece to dart forward with his great runs when he could, Ben, was making some great tackles in the midfield and dribbling forward whenever possible, George was causing huge problems down the abbey end with his ball shepherding skills as abbey just couldn’t get the ball from him, Jamie managed to lay of a lovely ball to Steven who made one of his fantastic runs in to the box and was brought down for a penalty, the management team had decided Reece should take the penalty, and somehow the keeper just managed to save it, although if we was a bit quicker of the mark the rebound would have gone in. At this stage Charlie and I was happy with a 2-1 defeat, but it seems the boys had other ideas. Abbey had started to fight back and responded by putting a ball wide, then after a scramble in the abbey box George stepped up and slotted him a wonderful goal to make it 2-2, at this point the Byfleet fans and management team were going ecstatic, and the game wasn’t over, both teams continued to try and win the game and missed chances but in the dieing minutes Reece made a run down the right wing and put in a great cross, Steven only needed one chance and buried it in the net to win the game, 3-2.

Would moving kids' football to a summer game help improve the development of young footballers?
Yes - better pitches mean a better chance to develop technique/skills
No - wouldn't make any real difference to development
Maybe - but I'd be worried about more injuries on firm pitches
