So after nine seasons for Byfleet Village this was to be the team’s last game in the red and white shirt. Byfleet went into the last game knowing that realistically second place was out of there grasp but the team were all desperate to end the season and there Byfleet careers on a high.

The visitors to Byfleet were Walton Heath, the game was moved to the Rec as Walton's pitch was out of use. Byfleet started with the same side that played so well the week before in the 3-1 victory over Kew.

Byfleet were determined to get off to a quick start and that did so in some style. Inside two minutes Byfleet went infront, Jonnie Green curled an accurate shot into the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area to give Byfleet a dream start.

In the early stages Byfleet were dominant in the midfield and strikers Hizaoui and Mcdermott seemed to be breaching the Walton defence with ease. It wasn't long before Byfleet got there second, a Jonnie Green’s volleyed ball over the top found the run of Hizaoui. The keeper looked as if he had beaten Hizaoui to the ball but let the ball out his grasp, giving Hizaoui a simple finish into an open goal.

At this stage Byfleet were cruising and started to become complacent as Walton started to come back into the game and gain control of the midfield. Jon Creswick had to save an effort at the near post with his legs, but he could do nothing as Kew pulled one back. A straight through ball split open the Byfleet defence, allowing a Walton striker through to put the ball past keeper Creswick. It was an almost identical goal that got the visitors an equaliser, with the Walton midfield running through at will they were able to breach the Byfleet defence once more, with a Heath striker sliding the ball into the goal when one on one with Creswick.

At this stage Byfleet were on the ropes and needed to regroup, thankfully the quick Walton double seemed to spark Byfleet back into action. Just before the half time whistle Byfleet retook the lead, again Jonnie Green was involved, his corner from the right was met by the head of Grant Jux at the near post, and the Byfleet winger headed the ball down and past the reaches of the goalkeeper to give Byfleet a 3-2 half time lead.

Like the first half Byfleet started on top, again Hizaoui was causing the Walton defence problems and had a couple of efforts go close before he finally added his second and Byfleet fourth. Jonnie Green took a quick free kick which was flicked on by Caylem Mcdermott into his strike partners path, Hizaoui finished well across the keeper and into the far corner of the net.

Byfleet knew that after throwing a two goal lead away in the first half that the game was far from over. Walton showed there spirit and again started to come back into the game and it was a mistake at the back that allowed them within one goal again. A harmless through ball looked as if it was going to run through to keeper Creswick, however as he came out the Byfleet number one slipped on the wet turf allowing a Kew striker an easy finish.

Thankfully for Byfleet they didn’t make the same mistake they did in the first half and didn’t let Kew draw level and defended well as Byfleet dug in and showed there determination to win there last game. Byfleet came close to a fifth when Jonnie Green’s inswinging corner came off the top of the bar, minutes later Green took an outswinging corner from the right hand side which was diverted into his own goal by the Kew keeper for a fifth and final Byfleet goal at the Recreation Ground.

Byfleet held out for a deserved victory in there final game and it was a fitting end to a good season. Going forward it was another vintage Byfleet attacking display, Jonnie Green put in arguably his best performance of the season, scoring two and having a hand in the others. Hizaoui up front got a deserved double and could have had three or four.

Byfleet will have to wait for a league decision to see whether the victory will leave them in 2nd or 3rd place in there final season. Whatever the decision proves to be it has been another exciting season for the Village, in a hugely competitive league a third place finish is a good achievement. The win over Walton also means that Byfleet have maintained there unbeaten home record for the season.

All that remains now for Byfleet is the presentation evening on the 9th of June at Byfleet Village Hall.

Would moving kids' football to a summer game help improve the development of young footballers?
Yes - better pitches mean a better chance to develop technique/skills
No - wouldn't make any real difference to development
Maybe - but I'd be worried about more injuries on firm pitches
