Season 2005/6

After an impressive finish to the last campaign the team was
optimistic it could build on it’s 7th place finish last season.

Any hopes of a cup run were quickly dashed with a spiritec 4-3 defeat away at eventual finalists Guildford City Boys. James Couttie and Jonnie Green returned to the team while Tom Lloyd and James Burt made debuts. Couttie marked his return with two goals, one directly from a corner.

The first day of the league campaign saw arguably the goal of the season. Tom Lloyd’s cross was met by right back Jamie Oughton who rifled the ball into the net on the volley. However the goal was not enough to stop a 2-1 defeat. Another poor performance led to another 2-1 defeat a week later at
Guildford Saints.

The first win of the season was a 3-0 victory at Knaphill, where James Burt and Grant Jux scored their one and only goals of the season.

Byfleet’s inconsistent form continued with 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats from the next 6 games. Two 7-2 defeats to Bookham were the low point of the season, a double for Joel Wotton in the home game being the only positive. However there were also entertaining home victories over Knaphill (5-2) and
Littleton Lions (4-2) with Caylem McDermott and Joe Wright amongst the goal scorers.

With a new formidable centre back pairing of Simon Swadling and Grant Jux Byfleet finally began to show their best form towards the end of the season. The team scored 10 goals with only 1 reply in the home games against Burpham and
Guildford Saints including a headed goal for Lewis Voller. A superb away performance at Littleton Lions (3-1) had Byfleet looking towards the top three. The best performance of the seasSpartak Guildford. An early Jonnie Green goal and some heroic defending gave the team an excellent victory. It was a
superb team performance with subs Matt Mason and Joel Wotton helping to secure the win with some excellent defending late on. We were the only team to beat the Champions at home all season.

However a week later Spartak reversed the result to end any chance of promotion. We went into the last game of the
season against Molesey knowing a win would secure third spot. Tom Warren’s inch perfect pass put Caylem McDermott through to secure another victory and third place.

Overall the season was an enjoyable one in a very competitive league. The back line up of Jon Creswick, Jamie Oughton, Lewis Voller, Grant Jux and Simon Swadling conceded only three goals and kept 3 clean sheets in the last 6 games to help secure third place.

Throughout the season James Burt gave the back four needed protection whiles James Couttie and Jonnie Green created numerous chances for the ever lively and dangerous front two of Joe Wright and Caylem McDermott. Tom Warren provided much needed
consistency on the right while Tom Lloyd, Matt Mason and Joel Wotton provided invaluable cover in a number of positions throughout the season. Ben Davies and Ben Braine-Porter also contributed well in the games that they played.

Overall a good season, which could have led to promotion, if not for an indifferent start. Next season is the teams last
together in youth football and so we will be going all out for
silverware in cup and league.

My thanks to David Fuller, Fiona and Terry for all their hard work.

Season 2004/5

Several new signings after last seasons disappointing last place finish brought new optimism to the team. Last years small squad had been bolstered to twenty players, giving the management team a lot of talent to choose from! However there was still two occasions where we fielded less than eleven men, with only Tom Warren and Simon Swadling playing every game!

Any hopes of an easier season this time around were quickly diminished as we went down 4-2 to Molesey in the opening game, Caylem McDermott scoring both goals.. We responded excellently with our first win, 3-1 over Oxshott, Joe Wright, Grant Jux and Eoin McCarthy scoring their first goals for the club. A month later Byfleet were unlucky to lose 4-1 at Primer division New Haw in the league cup, with Joel Wotton hitting the woodwork on two occasions. A game later Byfleet saw off Oxshott once more, this time by a single goal, scored by Caylem McDermott.

A spirited 6-0 away defeat to Guildford with only nine men was the beginning of a horrific winter period. The squad was plagued with illness and injury and went through the winter without a victory, a first goal from Simon Swadling at Littleton Lions being one of few highlights.

However the boys never gave in and the improved weather and the signing of a new player seemed to re-inspire Byfleet’s season with Lewis Voller signing just before transfer deadline day! His no nonsense style tightened up a previously leaky backline, as Byfleet adopted a 5-4-1 formation. On Voller’s debut Byfleet were unlucky to lose a late goal to lose 1-0 against Guildford. Byfleet ended their losing run by drawing 4-4 in a thriller at Molesey, with Joe Wright bagging a hat trick. One of the performances of the season followed at rivals Chertsey, we were unlucky to lose by a single goal after a brilliant defensive display with some excellent reflex saves from keeper Jon Creswick. Centre backs Ben Brain Porter and Ben Davis also standing out amongst others.

A remarkable end to the season began against a strong Teddington outfit with Jon Creswick taking over as captain for the remainder of the season. With the game at 2-2 going into the last minute, Joe Wright scored a spectacular winner, left foot, top corner, twenty five yards…definitely goal of the season! Narrow yet deserved victories 4-3 & 2-1 over Walton & Hersham and Guildford City respectively followed. We went into the final game knowing a win would take us into a very respectable 7th place. We obliged with a 2-1 victory at Spartak, Joe Wright scoring another two to take his tally to 15 in 6 games. This victory ended the season on a high after four consecutive league victories, in what again has been a very eventual season on and off the pitch!

We would like to thank all the boys for their hard work this season. Hopefully next season with a more settled squad and a couple of new faces we can push on and improve once more on this season’s achievements!

Season 2003/4

BYFLEET BOYS UNDER 15’S
2003-2004 SEASON

My first season with Byfleet boys has ended with a lot to be happy with, it was a difficult season with all the history of the team from the season before hanging over us but I think we managed to put it behind us and get on with our season.

We have played some terrific matches and only lost some by the odd goal, at times luck just didn’t seem to be with us. One of the best examples was the away game to Molesey Juniors when we played fantastic football but just couldn’t get the ball in the net.

The worst game was home against Molesey B, we knew we only had 10 players (the only match we played with less than 11) and on the day that went down to 9, we scored first but it wasn’t to last, tired legs just could stop those Molesey goals going in, but to all the players credit they battled to the end.

We now look forward to next season, but I must say now that if it was not for Terry and Fiona then the team would not have started the season so to both of you THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP & SUPPORT. Also I must say thank you to the boys for all their hard work throughout out the season. I hope the lads enjoyed it and learned something from it I know I did.

Next season will be very different from this season as I have now passed my F.A. Level 1 Coaching Badge. I hope the boys will be the one's to benefit. It will be another difficult season but one we can only do better in. We now have Mike Oughton on board to help me with all aspects of the team. Thanks Mike.

I am looking for to seeing you all in the new season
